A South Texas frac operator installed a competitor’s 4” x 5 ½” refrac liner system. Following the cement job, the well failed to pass a pressure test. Despite multiple intervention attempts, diagnostics confirmed a leak at the liner top—resulting from the failure of the competitor’s liner top packer—which allowed fluid to inject down the backside of the 4” liner at approximately 3 bpm.
The severity of the leak ruled out any pumpdown wireline operations in the lateral and posed a high risk of liner top erosion during the upcoming frac. With over $1MM already invested in refrac prep and liner installation—and the frac crew scheduled to arrive imminently—the operator needed an immediate solution that didn’t involve pumping more cement.
The Solution: The Defender™ Compression Set Packer
Vertice deployed its DEFENDER™ Compression Set Packer with a crossover to the competitor’s existing 4” x 5 ½” latch seal assembly, stinging directly into the compromised liner top. This approach provided an effective seal without the need for cement squeeze job. The DEFENDER™ Packer was set using minimal slack-off weight, thanks to its low setting force requirement—removing the need for heavy-weight drill pipe.
Following deployment, the assembly passed a successful +10,000 psi pressure test. The rig was demobilized shortly after, allowing the frac crew to move in without delay. The entire operation was completed within 13 hours of Vertice arriving on location.
