THE CHALLENGE: BALL-IN-PLACE FRAC PLUG INCREASE RISK

A South Texas operator struggled with frequent preset events from multiple frac plug providers. This issue created costly operational downtime and incurred unnecessary expenses to rig up coiled tubing to drill out preset plugs. This risk is inherent with “ball-in-place” frac plugs if the frac ball cannot be flowed back.

After several preset incidents due to long laterals and other operational challenges, the operator switched to dropping the frac balls, which provided the option to erode the plug with sand in the event of a premature set while running in hole (RIH). The operator estimated that pumping the ball down each stage costs around $50,000 per well due to added pump time and additional fluid per stage. However, this was more cost-effective than risk of rigging up coiled tubing.

THE SOLUTION: THE PATENTED EDGE™ FRAC PLUG ELIMINATES SHORTCOMINGS OF BALL-IN-PLACE FRAC PLUG

Vertice Oil Tools deployed its patented EDGE™ frac plug to offer this operator the advantages of a “ball-in-place” frac plug without the related risks. The EDGE™ frac plug eliminates the need for a frac ball and includes a built-in contingency feature OPTIMUS(™) device, allowing the operator to bypass the plug at any stage of the operation and pump down into the well.

To validate the EDGE™ frac plug, the operator required it to pass a full functional test. The plug was set above the top perforation, OPTIMUS(™) activated, and then sand was pumped to erode the plug. This test demonstrated the plug’s functionality if required.

Vertice Oil Tools’s introduction of the EDGE™ led to significant savings in time and resources for frac operators. Vertice Oil Tools patented OPTIMUS(™) introduced a contingency system that allowed frac operators to bypass and erode the plug at any stage of the operation if needed.
