Production Slowing Down? Refrac Industry Challenges

An operator in South Texas wanted to eliminate wireline cutting from its mechanical isolation (casing-in-casing) refrac operations while saving time and improving well economics. Conventional operations required a 4” or 3.5” casing to be run inside of a 5.5” casing to surface and then cemented. A cement bond log is then run to determine the top of cement and where to place the cut. The key challenge was determining the proper top of cement and cutting the refrac casing efficiently without damaging the parent casing. This entails waiting on cement and complex wireline operations, including cutting.

The Solution: How to Save Over 72 Hours in Refrac Operations

In collaboration with the operator, Vertice Oil Tools developed the V-RELEASE™ Casing Sub, which is a fit-for-purpose patent-pending disconnect tool. With a compact and robust design, the V-RELEASE™ Casing Sub was run integral to the 4” refrac casing string and placed at the precise depth where the operator wanted to retrieve the casing. 

  • The V-RELEASE™ Casing Sub was set at a depth of ~12,400ft MD, and the cement job was pumped without issue. 
  • After the wiper plug bumped, the tool was activated and a bottoms up circulation was performed. 
  • After cement returns were confirmed at the surface, ensuring a proper cement displacement, the tool was disconnected, and the uncemented portion of the refrac casing was retrieved. 
  • Stage 1 was perforated and the rig was demobilized.
